The Colour of Beauty

There does not seem to be anything on television to watch anymore. Gone are the days when I would sit in front of the television and be entertained.

Tonight I  found a very interesting video on the NFB (National Film Board of Canada) application on my iPod Touch. The documentary The Colour of Beauty follows the struggle of Renee Thompson a black model and the difficulties that she faces in the fashion industry. It is not an isolated incident, but a common occurrence for black models.

iPad vs. iPhone

iPad

Images from Apple website

I love my iPod Touch, but I really want an iPhone. The reason that I have not purchased one yet is that I am currently in a 3 year contract with my cellphone provider. I have 11 months left on the contract.

The only difference that I can see between the iPod Touch and the iPhone is the internet service and camera. I am able to access the internet and email using Wi-Fi. The only thing that would stop me from getting an iPhone would be the monthly costs. I have a great plan. I only pay $28.25 a month including tax. I really don't want to pay more.

When I heard that Apple was going to announce a new product I was very excited. There were rumours that it would be tablet device. When I read that the device was called the iPad I could not believe the name and size of the product. It definitely was named by a man. Secondly, the size of the iPad was shocking. We actually pulled out rulers to see how long 9.7 inches was. It did not seem practical for travelling on a crowded bus or subway.

The iPad was released last weekend in the United States. My interest has grown again. In the past week I have been asked whether I planned to purchase the iPad. Others seemed more interested in the product than I did.

It would make sense for surfing the internet or watching videos. However, I would not use it for reading books. Personally I like reading books on paper, turning the pages and reviewing the front and back covers.

I cannot purchase both the iPhone and the iPad. I have some time to think about it. When the iPad comes to Canada I will visit the Apple store to play around with it. Until then I will continue to enjoy my iPod Touch.

App Store Junkie

I probably have more applications on my iPod Touch than anybody I know that owns an iPod Touch or iPhone. Most of them are free.

Holt Renfrew has a new iPhone application that is available on iTunes.

The Holt Renfrew iPhone App is great for anyone who loves the store. The application is divided into five sections:

  • Holts Collection
  • Events Calendar
  • Store Information
  • Social
  • Preferences

The application is iPhone and iPod Touch compatible

Discounted Gift Cards

Have you ever received a gift card that you never used? At this time of year many people will give or receive gift cards as Christmas presents.

The website CardSwap is Canada's #1 site for discounted gift cards at 10-40% off face value. The concept is similar to Ebay a peer to peer online market. Gift card holders can redeem their unwanted gift cards for cash and shoppers can save money.

I love a deal so I was very intrigued when I heard about the website. I have a gift card in my wallet that I have been carrying around for the last two months. I can't find anything in the store to purchase.

To purchase a gift card on the website take the following steps:

  • register on the website
  • search for the gift card by merchant, price or category
  • select the gift card
  • confirm shipping address
  • make payment using INTERAC online from your financial institution
You can also create a wish list of favourite retailers and are notified when gift cards become available.

All gift cards are validated before they are put on the website. The website does not accept credit cards or PayPal as a form of payment. The form of payment that is accepted is INTERAC. Making a payment is similar to making an online bill payment.

Enter to win an iPod Touch by visiting the website. The contest ends December 31, 2009.

iPhone 3G S

Apple is always coming out with new products. I am a fan. I love my Macbook and my iPods. I always wanted to get the iPhone. The iPhone was not available in Canada until 2008. I was stuck in a 3 year contract with my cellphone company. I decided to get the iPod Touch which is very similar to the iPhone, except it does not have the phone or camera. I can access my email or internet where ever there is a wireless connection.

On my trip I noticed that there were a lot of people in London and Paris that owned the iPhone. I really want it, but I do not want to pay the high voice and data plans. Right now I pay $28.25 for my cellphone (including taxes, network and access fees).

Now that it a 32GB version is available, it is looking more attractive.

Suede vs. Nintendo DS

Now that I have reached 75,000 points required to get up to $150 off at Shoppers Drug Mart I cannot decide whether I want to get the Suede bag or a Nintendo DS. I have not touched the Suede bag yet. It is behind a glass case and did not want to be tempted. Lately, I have been playing a lot of games on my iPod Touch. The Nintendo DS would be great for travelling long distances.

I think the only reason I want to get the Suede bag is that I still have not purchased a new bag yet and it is almost the end of April. I will make my decision by the end of the month. I will either have a new bag or the Nintendo DS. Either way I will be happy to say to the cashier, "I will be redeeming my Shoppers Optimum Points for this purchase."

Stylish Tech Apps

Your stylish lifestyle does not only exist in the fabulous clothes you wear or the newest "it" bag. You can carry your stylish lifestyle in the palm of your hands. I used to carry a palm pilot for many years. Now y iPod Touch has taken over the role of my pda. I keep my agenda, todo lists, grocery lists, games,  etc... on my iPod Touch.

There are so many applications on the iTunes App Store from travel, lifestyle, productivity, and entertainment.  You can also find applications for the stylish girl in you.

These are a few of my suggestions:

From Lucky magazine you can browse the latest shoe fashions from the spring shoe guide. You have the ability to check the price, store and location near you. I am not a shoe person so this application does not interest me, but I know there are many people who would love the application.

At Style.com you can have the latest runway shows in the palm of your hand. The application also has information on parties, style videos and a style blog.

Stylish Girl is a style planner. You can take pictures of the items that you own and organize them to create outfits, plan for a vacation, and create a wish list.

Last but not least is SplashShopper. I have used this application for many years. I used it on every palm pilot that I owned, and was very happy when it was made available for the iPod Touch/iPhone. The desktop for SplashShopper also allows you to update the lists in the application and sync with the the iPod Touch/iPhone. The application allows you to manage your grocery list, books, movies, music, and more.

One Week

It has been a long week. I am finally able to get out of my bed. At least I was able to access my email on my iPod Touch. The boredom drove me crazy. When not sleeping I would be on my MacBook.

The first thing that I want to do before I go back to the office is go to Starbucks. For some strange reason, I was craving Starbucks and Kettle Chips. Thankfully, my sister was kind enough to buy me some Kettle Chips on Friday. The bag is done. Now all I need is a grande latte from Starbukcks with whip cream.

I ventured out of the house today to gets some fresh air. I did not want the blast of Arctic Canadian air to hit me first thing Monday morning. It would be a shock to the system. I went to the local mall which does not have much, but it was better than nothing. It was odd not spending any money for one week. My bank must have thought that something was wrong. I just bought two pillows and I got a great deal for a duvet cover at the Bay which was originally priced at $99.99. It was marked down to $49.99. When the salesperson rang up my order it was $29.99. That was all I could handle for the day. I hope I don't go crazy spending next week.

AppShopper

I am a shopaholic who not only loves shopping for handbags and beauty products, but I am also a tech geek. I found this amazing website that tracks the newest iPhone and iPod touch application updates and price changes in iTunes. I have added the RSS feed to my email application which I check constantly.
